Who We Are

Karmayogi Babasaheb Deshmukh, the founder of the Sanskriti Samvardhan Mandal (SSM), was a man deeply dedicated to the betterment of society. His tireless efforts to provide education and care for orphaned and underprivileged children earned him immense respect. His compassion extended beyond human welfare. He recognized the plight of donkeys, often burdened with heavy loads, and readily agreed to establish the “Dharma Donkey Sanctuary” when he was approached with the idea. Babasaheb’s sensitive heart and commitment to animal welfare ensured the sanctuary’s success, which was inaugurated in 2000 by then Union Minister, Mrs. Maneka Gandhi.

The Dharma Donkey Sanctuary (DDS) has been caring for the health of donkeys in the area for the past 24 years, benefiting approximately 5,500+ donkeys in Nanded, Dharashiv, and Beed. Donkeys continue to play a vital role in rural life, transporting fertilizers, medicine to fields, and crops back home, as well as contributing to construction work, transporting sand, gravel, and stones. However, these animals suffer from a high prevalence of diseases like strangles, tetanus, and colic. Recognizing the lack of access to veterinary care for donkeys, the sanctuary started providing vaccinations, sterilization, and other treatments through camps.

They have partnered with animal welfare organizations like “Blue Cross of Hyderabad”, “Brooke Hospital for Animals”, Fiapo, and the government veterinary hospital to expand their reach.

What We Do

Sparsham

There are around 120 brick kilns in the Parali and Ambajogai areas of Beed district. Over 800 donkeys are used in these kilns to transport soil and bricks. The health of these donkeys working in the kilns is being taken care of by DDS and FIAPO through the “Sparsham” project.

Pet Clinic

In addition to organizing medical camps specifically for donkeys, our organization operates a veterinary care center where we provide comprehensive animal care services. Typically, we address the requirements of local residents and their domesticated animals.

Together, We Can Make a Difference for Animals in Need

Every day, countless animals suffer silently from neglect, abuse, and homelessness. They endure pain, fear, and uncertainty, often without access to basic necessities such as food, shelter, and medical care. We believe that every animal, regardless of their past, deserves a chance to live a life free from suffering and full of love, safety, and care. Our commitment drives us to rescue animals from harmful situations, provide them with critical medical treatment, and help them heal—physically and emotionally—through rehabilitation.

But rescue is only the beginning of their journey. Our dedicated team works around the clock to nurture and rehabilitate these animals, ensuring they regain their trust in humanity and become ready for loving forever homes. Whether it’s life-saving surgeries, vaccinations, or simply a warm place to sleep, we strive to meet their every need.

However, we cannot do this vital work alone. We rely on the compassion and generosity of people like you to help provide these animals with the care and kindness they so desperately need. By donating, volunteering your time, or simply spreading the word, you become an essential part of their recovery. Your involvement helps us give them a second chance at life and shows them that not all humans are to be feared.
