Who We Are
Karmayogi Babasaheb Deshmukh, the founder of the Sanskriti Samvardhan Mandal (SSM), was a man deeply dedicated to the betterment of society. His tireless efforts to provide education and care for orphaned and underprivileged children earned him immense respect. His compassion extended beyond human welfare. He recognized the plight of donkeys, often burdened with heavy loads, and readily agreed to establish the “Dharma Donkey Sanctuary” when he was approached with the idea. Babasaheb’s sensitive heart and commitment to animal welfare ensured the sanctuary’s success, which was inaugurated in 2000 by then Union Minister, Mrs. Maneka Gandhi.
The Dharma Donkey Sanctuary (DDS) has been caring for the health of donkeys in the area for the past 24 years, benefiting approximately 5,500+ donkeys in Nanded, Dharashiv, and Beed. Donkeys continue to play a vital role in rural life, transporting fertilizers, medicine to fields, and crops back home, as well as contributing to construction work, transporting sand, gravel, and stones. However, these animals suffer from a high prevalence of diseases like strangles, tetanus, and colic. Recognizing the lack of access to veterinary care for donkeys, the sanctuary started providing vaccinations, sterilization, and other treatments through camps.
They have partnered with animal welfare organizations like “Blue Cross of Hyderabad”, “Brooke Hospital for Animals”, Fiapo, and the government veterinary hospital to expand their reach.
