Mr. Ratilal Shah and Mrs. Bonnie Shah

Mr. Ratilal Shah and Mrs. Bonnie Shah, a non-resident Indian couple living in America, frequently visited Mumbai. In 1990, during a visit to Sagroli, they learned about the ongoing SSM project. Deeply moved by SSM founder Karmayogi Babasaheb Deshmukh and his dedication to orphaned and underprivileged children, the Shahs began to visit and contribute annually. Their love for animals inspired them to start a program to care for donkeys they saw burdened with heavy loads. With Babasaheb’s support, they established the “Dharma Donkey Sanctuary.” The sanctuary was inaugurated in 2000 by Union Minister Mrs. Maneka Gandhi. Although Babasaheb and the Shahs have passed away, the sanctuary continues their compassionate work, caring for the well-being of donkeys.

Who We Are

Babasaheb Deshmukh

Karmayogi Babasaheb Deshmukh, the founder of the Sanskriti Samvardhan Mandal (SSM), was a man deeply dedicated to the betterment of society. His tireless efforts to provide education and care for orphaned and underprivileged children earned him immense respect. His compassion extended beyond human welfare. He recognized the plight of donkeys, often burdened with heavy loads, and readily agreed to establish the “Dharma Donkey Sanctuary” when he was approached with the idea. Babasaheb’s sensitive heart and commitment to animal welfare ensured the sanctuary’s success, which was inaugurated in 2000 by then Union Minister, Mrs. Maneka Gandhi.

The Dharma Donkey Sanctuary (DDS) has been caring for the health of donkeys in the area for the past 24 years, benefiting approximately 5,500+ donkeys in Nanded, Dharashiv, and Beed. Donkeys continue to play a vital role in rural life, transporting fertilizers, medicine to fields, and crops back home, as well as contributing to construction work, transporting sand, gravel, and stones. However, these animals suffer from a high prevalence of diseases like strangles, tetanus, and colic. Recognizing the lack of access to veterinary care for donkeys, the sanctuary started providing vaccinations, sterilization, and other treatments through camps.

They have partnered with animal welfare organizations like “Blue Cross of Hyderabad”, “Brooke Hospital for Animals”, Fiapo, and the government veterinary hospital to expand their reach. The sanctuary is actively raising awareness about donkey nutrition and health, establishing a full-time clinic at Sagroli.

The positive impact of the sanctuary’s efforts is evident in the improved living conditions of donkeys. Once seen grazing freely, they are now kept in stables with access to green fodder and clean water, akin to other livestock. The price of a donkey has also increased significantly from INR 1,000-2,000 to INR 20,000-25,000, a testament to the success of the sanctuary’s work.

Karmayogi Babasaheb Deshmukh’s vision continues to ensure the well-being of the donkeys, a testament to his lasting impact on the lives of both humans and animals.

For the past 22 years, the Dharma Donkey Sanctuary has cared for around 5,500 donkeys in Nanded and Beed, where these animals are essential for agriculture and construction work. Unlike cows and buffaloes treated at government facilities, donkeys were often neglected. To address this, the sanctuary has partnered with organizations like the Blue Cross of Hyderabad and Brooke Hospital for Animals to provide vaccinations, sterilization, and treatments through camps. They have also established a full-time clinic at Sagroli and raised awareness about donkey nutrition and health. This care has significantly improved donkey welfare, with many now kept in stables and fed green fodder. The price of a donkey has risen from INR 1,000-2,000 to INR 20,000-25,000, reflecting the sanctuary’s success.
